This
is the website of Bringing [Dis]Ability to the Bar (BDABar),
a non-profit organisation dedicated to disabled aspiring
barristers. Their
mission is to dismantle the barriers that affect disabled individuals
who aspire to become barristers and to enhance accessibility within
the legal profession.
The organisation was founded by James Ekin
and Konstantina Nouka. The latter is a current LLM Human
Rights Law student at UCL and has Ulrich Muscular Dystrophy. She
launched the organisation in 2023 after facing severe discrimination
and discouragement during her applications for mini-pupillages.
At
BDABar, they
believe that raising awareness and creating career opportunities are
most effective when combined with research, evidence-based advocacy,
and open, non-judgmental conversations. Their
holistic strategy aims to simultaneously improve accessibility to the
legal profession and educate the wider community on disability issues.
Furthermore,
BDABar's mentorship programmes and educational resources offer
personalised guidance and support, helping disabled individuals to
navigate their
journey with confidence.
In
summary, embracing
the principles and support offered by BDABar can be a transformative
step in the legal
career of disabled
aspiring barristers promoting both personal growth and professional
development within a more accessible and equitable legal field.
